‘For our Elders’- Local schools mark NAIDOC week

NAIDOC week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
NAIDOC Week was celebrated by Guyra Central School last week with cultural NAIDOC activities for students including Indigenous scratch art, designing animal magnets, boomerangs and emu eggs, creating aboriginal inspired canvas’, weaving keyrings, necklaces & baskets, cooking wattle seed scones and marinated kangaroo, beef or chicken kebabs.
Guyra Central celebrated Elders and their families by hosting a special morning tea to acknowledge the Elders contribution to the school community. Students were involved in the organisation and were honoured to have their family members join them for the morning tea.
The Elders created an artwork which will be displayed at the school. Following the morning tea Tremane Patterson conducted a traditional Smoking Ceremony and Beryl Landsborough and Eunice Blair cut the cake.
Community members also took part in a whole school NAIDOC Week Assembly. Tremane Patterson conducted a traditional Smoking Ceremony before the commencement of the Assembly and joined Mr Geoff Swan to present NAIDOC Week Awards to students and staff.
To complete a fantastic week of celebrating our Elders, history and culture Guyra Central School hosted a BBQ for students and community members.
